| Summary, etc | On September 26, 1513, the Spanish soldier Vasco Nunez de Balboa climbed slowly to the top of a mountain ridge. When he reached the top, he could see the blue waters of a great ocean which he called the South Sea. Balboa and his men had become the first Europeans to see the water that would one day be named the Pacific Ocean. |
