Named by a sea captain who lost his way in the early 1600s, the area's long coastline soon attracted settlers from seagoing nations in the Old World. Native Americans were driven away, and by 1787, Delaware officially became the first U.S. state. During the Civil War, Delaware's Underground Railroad helped many slaves escape to freedom.
